HP and Personal Contract Purchase

What is Hire Purchase (HP) ?

Hire Purchase (HP) is a common form of finance for both cars and vans.
It can be a cost-effective way of financing your vehicle if you wish to own it outright at the end of the agreement term.

How does it work?
After paying an initial deposit (typically 10% - 30% of the vehicle's value), the remaining value of the vehicle plus interest and fees is paid back in monthly instalments spread across an agreed term of up to 5 years.

The benefits of HP include:
• Owning the vehicle outright at the end of the agreement term, with no lump sum to pay off.
• No mileage limits.

The disadvantages of HP can include:
• Typically higher monthly repayments than PCP finance.
• Not owning the vehicle until the final payment is made.
• Unlike PCP, the future value of your vehicle is not guaranteed.

What is Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) ?

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) is a popular finance option in the UK as it offers fixed monthly repayments and the ability to change your car every few years.

How does it work?
You pay an initial deposit, followed by a series of monthly repayments typically over 2 to 4 years, followed by an optional final payment 'Guaranteed Minimum Future Value' (MGFV) at the end of the contract.

At the end of the agreement you have 3 options:
1.Hand the car back to the finance company and owe no more (subject to the vehicle being within the agreed mileage limit and within fair wear and tear limits).
2.Exchange your car for a new model and renew your PCP contract.
3.Buy the car outright by paying off the optional final payment (this can be re-financed).

The benefits of PCP include:
• Often lower monthly repayments compared to hire purchase or a personal loan.
• The flexibility to change your car, keep it or walk away at the end of the contract.

The disadvantages of PCP can include:
• Not actually owning the car unless you pay the optional balloon payment.
• Mileage limit with additional charges if you exceed it.
• The risk of high costs if you need to leave the contract early, exceed your agreed mileage limit or return the car with excessive wear and tear

Do I need to pay a deposit ?

You can pay Zero deposit or as little as you wish,
£99.00 deposit is quite common.

You can pay as much as you wish,
however we do not normally recomend paying more than 10% of the vehicle retail price.

How do I apply for finance ?

You will need to fill out a finance proposal form.
One of our sales team will be happy to help complete the application with you - either onsite or over the telephone.

We will require the following information at the point of application:

• Three years address history

• Employment details

• Bank account details

• Your driving licence (in your current address)

• A utility bill dated within the last 90 days

How long does a finance decision take ?

A finance decision normally take between 1 and 2 hours, once a finance application form has been received by our admin team.

Can I settle my finance early ?

You can settle your finance agreement at any time on both Hire Purchase (HP) and Personal Contract Purchase (PCP.

The first step is to ask your finance provider for a settlement figure.
This is the remaining amount left to pay on the finance agreement, which you can then pay off.

What are the typical agreement requirements ?

HP and PCP agreements come with certain stipulations.

You will normally be required to:
1. Service the car according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
2. Keep the car in good condition.
3. Take our a fully comprehensive insurance policy
4. Not exceed a specified mileage over the course of the contract (PCP only)

Any requirements will be stated in the finance contract and should be read carefully before you sign.

Can I return my car early ?

If you wish to return your vehicle early and you have already paid more than half of the total amount payable on the finance agreement, or you make up the difference between what you have already paid and the half of the total amount payable figure.
You have the right to return the car to the finance provider under the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

This is called ‘voluntary termination’.

Please be aware though, if you have already paid more than half of the total amount payable, you will not get back any extra you have paid over the half the total amount payable figure.

Car / Van Leasing (Contract Hire)

What is leasing ?

Contract Hire or Leasing as it is also known is a long-term rental agreement for a fixed period of time with an agreed annual mileage allowance.

Set at a fixed monthly price, it is an alternative and sometimes cheaper funding solution to buying a new car or van.

As it is a hire and not a purchase you will never own the vehicle, it will go back to the finance company at the end of the contract.

Difference between business & personal leasing ?

Business leasing is for limited company, partnership, sole trader or LLP's.
Some offers are available on Business Contract Hire only, this can result in a difference in price between business and personal offers.

Business leasing can also offer positive tax implications, you can reclaim up to 50% of the rental (for cars) or up to 100% (for commercial vehicles) on a business contract hire agreement.

But that's not to say it’s the perfect option for everyone.

Business customers can also get extra discount if they run larger fleets.

In comparison if you are applying for vehicle finance as a private individual, you may be eligible for a personal lease. Personal Contract Hire is similar to a Business contract with the exception of reclaiming the VAT.

All personal contract hire prices include VAT.

If you’re unsure, your sales consultant will be able to help.

Will I have to pass a credit check ?

The simple answer is Yes.

As part of the leasing application process, you will be asked to submit a finance application form.

Most funders ask for a good to excellent credit score in order to be accepted for Contract Hire.

It is worth pointing out that no lender uses your credit score alone to approve or decline you for finance, other factors come into play such as your ability to make regular payments on time and any other debts you may have.

How long is the lease period ?

Our contracts range from 12 to 48 months,
depending on the vehicle and contract chosen.

Most customers choose 2 or 3 year contracts.
4 year contracts are available, but it is worth noting that in the 4th year of the agreement you will be responsible for the MOT and any repair costs on top of the routine servicing and maintenance, as most vehicle come with the standard 3 years manufacturers warranty.

What is included in my contract ?

All of our lease contracts include the following:

• Free UK mainland delivery - For some locations a delivery charge will be made, depending on address and vehicle manufacturer.

• Full manufacturer’s warranty - For most vehicles this will be 3 years.

• Breakdown recovery - All contract hire contracts come with at least 12 months breakdown assistance, with some it is included for the full term.

• Road tax - With contract hire the funder will provide Road Fund Licence for the duration of the agreement, as they will remain the registered owner of the vehicle.

What isn’t included in my contract ?

The following features are not included:

• Vehicle insurance - You are responsible for arranging your own insurance on the vehicle. This must be a fully comprehensive insurance policy..

• Maintenance & Servicing - Maintenance is an optional cost and includes all servicing, necessary maintenance of tyres, brakes, the exhaust and the battery of your vehicle, plus any necessary labour costs..

Is annual mileage relevant to the contract ?

Your annual mileage is used to calculate your monthly rental payments, this is based on the estimated residual value of the vehicle at the end of the contract.

If you exceed your stated mileage you will have to pay an excess mileage charges based on the pence per mile rate quoted at the start of the Contract Hire agreement.

For this reason it is best to overestimate your annual mileage.

During the contract if you believe you will exceed your mileage allowance, we may be able to increase your total contract mileage allowance.
This will increased your monthly payment.

Can I end a contract hire early ?

Yes, you can end a contract hire agreement early.

However you will be charged some or all of the remaining rentals by the finance provider to return the vehicle early.

Before cancelling a contract hire agreement, we would advise finding out exactly how many of the remaining monthly rentals you would be required to pay to end the contract.

Contract hire can be quite an expensive agreement to end early!
